Abstract:

Abstract In order to evaluate the effects of drought stress and defoliation on sunflower, a study was conducted under controlled conditions. Treatments were a combination of three levels of drought ((100, 60 and 30 percent of Field Capacity (FC)) and three levels of defoliation (control, removal of either 4 or 6 leaves from lower part of the plant) laid out, in a Completely Randomized Design with four replications. Drought stress was applied from 4-leaf- stage up to the end of plant growth period while leaf removal was conducted at the heading stage. Results indicated that drought stress affected most of the measured parameters. Plant height, plant dry matter, stem diameter, head size, seed number/head, 100-seed weight and seed weight/ head declined upon drought stress as compared to control. SPAD readings increased as drought stress increased. Defoliation caused an increase in SPAD and a decrease in seed number/head. Leaf number was not affected by either drought or defoliation. Keywords: Defoliation; Drought stress; Plant height; Seed weight; Sunflower

Effects of drought stress on grain qualitative traits in Iranian confectionary sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) landraces

This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of drought stress on grain yield and qualitative traits in some Iranian landraces of confectionary sunflower. Fifty six confectionary sunflower landraces were evaluated using three different water treatment conditions with three separate rectangular 7 × 8 lattice design with two replications. Irrigation treatments were as follows optimum irri...

Genetic analysis of leaf hydraulics in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under drought stress

Improvement in leaf hydraulics is directly related to the improvement of plant tolerance to drought stress. Therefore, a field and pot experiment was carried out to determine the type of genetic variability and selection of parental types on the basis of combining ability for leaf hydraulics. Genotypes showed similar performance in both experiments; higher values were shown by drought tolerant ...

Sunflower (helianthus Annuus L.) Response to Drought Stress at Germination and Seedling Growth Stages

Response of six sunflower hybrids/ breeding lines viz., G-101, SF-187, Hysun-33, Hysun-38, 64A-93 and S-278 to drought stress imposed at germination and seedling growth stages was investigated in a laboratory experiment (25±3C). Five water stress levels of zero (control), -0.35, -0.6, -1.33, and 1.62 MPa were developed using polyethyleneglycol-6000 (PEG-6000). Complete randomized design with th...

Morphological and molecular responses of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) lines to drought stress

Drought stress is a serious adverse factor limiting growth and productivity of sunflower. Evaluation of defense systems is important for producing resistant cultivars. In this study, some agro-morphological and molecular characteristics of six sunflower lines were evaluated under normal and irrigation at 40 and 60% of field capacity in randomized complete block design (RCBD). The results showed...

Influence of drought stress on growth, protein expression and osmolyte accumulation in sunflower Helianthus annuus L. c.v. Peredovik

Drought stress causes considerable yield losses in agriculture and receives high attention in current sunflower breeding programs. For this study, an in vitro system based on MS media (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) supplemented with polyethylene glycol 6000 (Korell, 1997) was established to examine sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seedlings under artificial drought stress conditions. The objective...
